WHAT I WANT is some simple old-fashioned-yes, by God, old-fashioned—romance for a fucking change! And, what do I get?
“Come on, buddy,” Boyd says, “if worse comes to worst, you'll still probably end up with an expensive box of chocolates. Will's old man is Talmoth Brockner of THE Brockner Chocolates, after all?"
Chocolates romantically old-fashioned, yes?
“Jesus!” I say. “You actually think a box of chocolates, however expensive, compensates for yet another night with yet another man who's convinced he's got a date with punching-bag Denny Chambers?"
Denny Chambers is the role I play weekly on TV's number-one rated prime-time show, Belly of the Beast. Getting cast as the LAPD cop show's token gay has been a God-send as far as my career is concerned. As far as my romantic life is concerned ... well....
Denny Chambers started out as one very small part, as a concession to political correctness. I was cast with no assurances that either my character or I would last out our originally scheduled first season, but three years later there are still no plans, at least to my knowledge, to write Denny (and me) out any time soon.
Initially, I was surprised by how well my character is accepted by the mainstream viewing audience. I've since figured Denny is so sympathetic to straight viewers because he lives just the kind of kinky life-style middle America likes to think most gays live. He has been beaten and molested by his congressman father. He has run away from home, become a hustler, been picked up and beaten by several very mean and nasty johns. Presently, he's living with a very abusive lover. In short, he comes with a heap of mental baggage, including blatant masochistic tendencies. Most of the show's other characters rightly treat Denny as if he's a very attractive but decidedly dangerous time-bomb just waiting to go off.
What's really strange is how most everyone treats me, Chris Dougrey, off camera, as if Denny Chambers and I are one and the same. Even harder to deal with has been how my until-Denny sex life, surprisingly good, at least when I found time for it, has been completely metamorphosed by guys who now want to beat up me (AKA Denny) before they bed me (him).
“Come on, buddy,” Boyd insists. “Do this for me."
"Why don't you do it for yourself?” I know several people Boyd has managed to screw or be screwed by. Though, he isn't my type. He has red hair; I don't like red hair. He has an eagle tattoo on his right pec; I don't like tattoos. He has pale, pale skin; I like my men well-tanned. He looks a lot like my homo-hating brother; I don't like the looks of my homo-hating brother—never have.
“You think I wouldn't like doing it myself?” Boyd says. “Even with a bit of S&M involved? My doing it with Will was what I originally intended, believe me. I genuinely saw it as a God-send when I was introduced to the Will Brockner at that party, after having been informed he sometimes screws guys.
